NFC function has become a standard configure of smartphones in nowadays, but how can this NFC function help us in our life, and what can we do with it?
Payment
For example, Apple Pay.
Apple Pay is a contactless payment technology for Apple devices, it is developed with a basis of NFC technology which supports most major credit and debit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, Emerican Express, Union Pay, etc. Without NFC technology, the payment function cannot be realized.
Transportation
For example, Tap & Go MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority)
Only if there is a “Tap and Go” sign on the bus, or the metro entrance, that means you can access with your NFC phone without buying any tickets or transportation cards. But of course you need to add your credit card or debit card into the wallet in your phone first, if payment failed, you will not be allowed to enter in the bus or metro gate.
Access Control
As the same theory of “transportation”, your NFC smartphone can be used as an access control card. But what’s different from the above application, access control is usually realized by encoding or encrypting with certain data inside the phone. Once the system detects the data inside your NFC phone, it will issue a command to the lock to open or not open the door. Furthermore, you can set an alarm in the system that in case somebody is trying to open the door without correct command, you will notice the potential danger immediately.
Data Transferring
NFC smartphone can be used as an NFC tag or an NFC reader simultaneously. Therefore, you can transfer the files, pictures, videos in your NFC phone with another NFC phone easily and very quickly. Just choose the files you want to share, simply tap your phone to the other one, the transfer is done – just make sure the NFC function in both phones are turned on.
Authenticity Checking
In the past, most sellers are using QR code for anti-counterfeiting. But since QR code technology is easily to be decrypted and copied, many sellers in nowadays especially luxury brands are using NFC technology for anti-counterfeiting. This, of course is based on the widely usage of NFC phones, that they know their consumers can easily check the authenticity of their products with their NFC phones with a simple tap. The high security of NFC available with 3DES encryption gaurantees their products from being copied.

iPhone – There needs a further explanation that iPhone’s NFC only supports Apple Pay and detecting data inside NFC tag yet. To be used for detecting data inside NFC tag, the version has to be IOS 13 or later; for Apple Pay, check Apple’s official instructions here.
